DAIRY

Michelson Laboratories’ Dairy Department is involved in every step of dairy product testing from raw milk to the finished product. Each dairy product is carefully tested by our state-licensed and federally-certified technicians.

We conduct daily analyses on raw milk for Percent Components using infrared technology. This instrument is calibrated according to State of California guidelines utilizing samples we receive from the State of California on a weekly basis. These samples are run for Butterfat, Protein, Lactose, and Solids Nonfat each morning to ensure proper instrument calibration. In addition, check samples are run every 20 samples to maintain accuracy of results. Once completed, our results are downloaded electronically for customer use on a daily basis.

Somatic Cell Count (SCC) tests are performed on raw milk using the Bentley Somacount 150. This state-of-the-art somatic cell counting instrument uses positive pressure, gear pumps and syringe pumps to manage fluid flow. With its laser based system and computer control technology, this instrument can perform 150 tests per hour. The Bentley is calibrated each morning to a set of state standards and is checked every 30 minutes to ensure accuracy.

A wide range of finished products from the dairy industry are also analyzed by our dairy lab on a routine basis. We frequently test these products for Butterfat by the Mojonnier method and Total Solids by Forced Air and Vacuum methodologies.

Our Microbiology Lab offers a full range of analyses to service the dairy industry on a daily basis. These include Standard Plate Count, Coliform Count, Laboratory Pasteurization Count, Pathogen Detection and Bacterial Identification. Antibiotic residue screening is also performed on raw milk utilizing Charm Science technology.

Our experienced staff and broad range of testing capability that utilizes some of the most sophisticated instrumentation available allows Michelson Laboratories’ Dairy Department to meet our clients’ varied needs and critical deadlines on a consistent basis.
