Trans Fat Regulation In an effort to provide consumers with
better information to make healthier food choices, the FDA issued a
regulation requiring food and some dietary supplement manufacturers
to list trans fatty acids on their nutrition facts panel. The
regulation that was issued on July 9, 2003 is aimed at helping
consumers reduce their trans fat consumption, which has been shown
to increase the risk of heart disease. The effective date of this
final rule is on January 1, 2006. Starting on this date, food labels
must include a trans fat category in nutritional labeling.
