SEAFOOD As regulatory guidelines continue to evolve in the seafood
industry, new technologies and procedures are required to meet these
challenges. Michelson Laboratories’ clients rely on us to provide
them with the latest technology and methodology to satisfy the
constant need for lower detection limits and new test parameters.
This is particularly important when a client’s in-house capabilities
are limited or when a project is best handled by an external
facility offering more comprehensive expertise.
Our state-of-the-art facilities meet virtually all FDA and USDC
testing requirements. Our technically diverse teams of chemists,
microbiologists, food technologists and entomologists manage
literally hundreds of samples daily. Michelson Laboratories’
customer service and technical staff maintain close working
relationships with all customers to provide an unparalleled level of
service and reliability.
Instrumentation Analysis – Michelson Laboratories, Inc. is
equipped with the most advanced instrumentation in the industry. Our
labs feature Gas Chromatographs (GC) and GC with Micro ECD (Electron
Capture Detector) which is used to test for Chloramphenicol. The GCs
are used to analyze for Methyl Mercury, PCBs, Cholesterol, Trans
Fatty Acids and Sorbic & Benzoic Acids. Nitrofuran and Sugar
analyses are performed using High Pressure Liquid Chromatographs (HPLC)
and Histamine is determined by fluorometric technology. Other
analyses are run by instruments such as the Gas Chromatograph Mass
Spectrometer (GCMS) that is used for confirmation of a variety of
compounds. All lab equipment is regularly calibrated and serviced to
make certain it meets or exceeds strict government and ISO 17025
guidelines. In addition, we utilize an advanced data station for
calculating and storing results, thus ensuring rapid and accurate
reporting.
Our state-of-the-art instrumentation, along with our highly skilled
and experienced chemists, means that our customers can feel
confident in the quality of their results for routine analysis and
for product on FDA Detention.
Organoleptic Evaluation – Sensory analysis involves
determining a product’s quality by means of the human senses,
particularly smell. Our technicians are trained for sensory analysis
in USDC workshops on a regular basis to keep our evaluations current
and consistent. In addition, we frequently perform side-by-side
organoleptic evaluations with USDC personnel at our facility to
ensure that our performance is in line with the experts from the
Department of Commerce. Michelson Laboratories, Inc. has extensive
experience in the field of decomposition analysis on a wide variety
of products in the seafood industry including, but not limited to,
shrimp, mahi-mahi, tuna and canned tuna. We perform these analyses
for our customers’ internal purposes and for product subject to FDA
Import Alert.
Microbiological Analysis – Michelson Laboratories offers a
full range of microbiological analysis for seafood products
including Salmonella, Listeria, Vibrio species, E.coli, Yersinia,
Staphylococcus aureus, aerobic plate count and more. Where
applicable, our laboratory also utilizes rapid screening methods for
critical analyses, such as the detection of pathogens. We also offer
pathogen testing using PCR technology via the BAX System from Dupont.
Filth Analysis – Michelson Laboratories, Inc. maintains a
staff of trained entomologists and technicians to perform a variety
of filth and extraneous matter tests on a wide range of seafood
products and others. Filth is defined by AOAC as any objectionable
matter contributed by animal contamination of product such as
rodent, insect, or bird matter; or any objectionable matter
contributed by unsanitary conditions. This can be a useful tool for
private entities to determine quality of product since the FDA often
uses this data to determine the admissibility of product on
automatic detention. |
